In 1903, the Wright brothers took flight in a machine of their own creation. The Times first wrote about Wilbur and Orville Wright's "box kite machine" about a week later. "They claim they have solved the problem of aerial navigation, and have never made a failure of any attempt to fly," The Times reported on Dec. 26. It was a number of years later, in October 1911, that Orville was photographed setting a world gliding record of 9 minutes and 45 seconds in Kitty Hawk, N.C., pictured here.
